The National Aquarium is looking for an Exhibit Builder to assist in the fabrication and maintenance of interpretive (dry) exhibit components as well as live (wet) installations. This position reports directly to the Director of Fabrication & Operations in the “Exhibits & Design” division and is part of a current team of exhibit builders.
Qualified candidates should be well versed in many light construction techniques such as wood & steel stud framing, steel reinforced concrete, wood & synthetic finish and trim, paints and coatings, etc. Candidates should also possess a good working knowledge of fasteners and adhesives, exhibit casework construction and repair, display lighting terms and techniques, etc. Candidates should be comfortable sculpting various media along with mixing and applying a variety of artists’ colors. Candidates must be experienced and comfortable with common woodworking tools and equipment.
Requirements of this job include specialized vocational training or a minimum of 3 years practical experience/knowledge in custom industrial/artistic fabrications using a wide range of materials such as cabinet building and carpentry, misc. mechanical hardware, fiber-reinforced plastic stock, polymer resin systems, concrete, wood, metals, PVC plumbing pipe, industrial and artistic painting, application of waterproof barriers and/or coatings. Candidates must be able to follow directions and communicate effectively using notes and dimensioned sketches. Candidates are expected to have photo documentation of previous work.
Husbandry experience, a strong knowledge and appreciation of the natural world, fluency in a recent version of AutoCAD and CNC knowledge and experience are all a plus.
