Bird Department Advanced Avian Internship – Fall/Winter 2013-14

Unpaid Internship – no housing available

The RBZ&G Bird Dept offers a diverse avicultural experience. The collection is comprised of approximately 300 specimens representing approximately 70 species ranging from small passerines to sub-Antarctic penguins. Birds are housed in an indoor tropical birdhouse, outdoor aviaries, and off-exhibit spaces. The collection is managed for exhibit, formal and informal education experiences, and propagation.

Under the supervision of the Bird Department, Interns will learn the fundamentals of bird keeping. Along side keepers, interns will be responsible for the proper care of an avian collection including: feeding and watering birds, cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining exhibits and some public areas, observing animals for illness, injury, and abnormal behavior. Participate in avian capture and restraint. Learn the basics of artificial incubation and hand-rearing. Gain exposure to AZA SSP policies and practice. Help prepare animal shipping crates for external animal moves. Assist on maintaining detailed behavioral, reproductive, and medical records and reports. Interact with guests by participating in educational presentations and guest interactions.
