The Greensboro Science Center, an AZA and AAM accredited aquarium, museum and zoo complex, is currently recruiting for the full time position of Aquarist II. This is an advanced aquarist position that will report directly to the SciQuarium Curator. The SciQuarium is a new facility that opened in June of 2013. Although the facility is new, it is not yet complete and new exhibits are being planned. Numerous jewel tanks and a potential 4,000 square-foot aquarium expansion are currently being discussed. Current SciQuarium exhibits include: Amazon, penguins, stingrays, fishing cat, small-clawed otters, four interactive SciPods and a 100,000-gallon Shark Reef tank.

The Aquarist II will be responsible for a diverse collection of fishes including multiple species of sharks and rays, as well as Amazonian and Caribbean fish. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to: LSS set up and maintenance, quarantine protocols, water quality testing, diets, dive shows, maintaining records, cleaning of all exhibits, overseeing other staff and volunteers, and assisting curator in veterinary procedures.

The minimum education requirement for this position is an associate degree in marine biology/animal husbandry, or a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Either must be from an accredited program. Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years aquarium experience (preferably in an AZA accredited facility), and be well-versed in the particulars of fish husbandry. Candidates must be willing to work weekends and holidays. Must be SCUBA certified and also hold a valid driver’s license. Must be able to work in hot and humid environments, and lift at least 50 lbs. The successful candidate should have basic plumbing skills, ability to diagnose common fish diseases, and be able to troubleshoot life support issues. Experience with Elasmobranchs is preferred. Compensation will be dependent upon experience and will include a full benefit package including medical and dental insurance, retirement, paid holidays, and annual leave.
