Position: Keeper (Reptile)

Reports to: Curator of Ectotherms and Exhibits

Status: Full-Time Non-Exempt

Position Summary:

Incumbents in this classification are responsible for providing food, water, shelter, and care for the reptiles and amphibians at the zoo. Any venomous experience is desired but not required.

Duties include cleaning and maintaining the animal exhibits and educating the public regarding the Zoo and its animal collection. Work is performed with limited supervision. This position is responsible for maintaining area compliance with AZA regulations and standards.

Summary of Species: Komodo dragons, Chinese alligators, American alligators, various viper species, large pythons, various turtle species, Hellbenders, various frog species and various lizard species. A total of over 450 ectotherms.

Responsibilities:

ZOO TEAM Duties

•Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.

•Constantly exhibit a guest centered attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in guest comfort and service.

•Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist guests with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the guest - do not wait to be asked.

•Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.

Animal Care Duties

•Cleans reptile enclosures, eating surfaces, and work areas on a daily basis.

•Monitors animal behavior routinely to ensure health and well being.

•Provides appropriate food and water for each individual animals needs

•Administers routine medication to animal

•Assists veterinarian with medical treatments, physicals, and procedures as needed.

•Prepares and distribute animal enrichment items.

•Commence training programs as directed by supervisor.

Other Duties

•Maintain zoo exhibits. This may include cleaning, washing, mowing, trimming, and installing new fixtures in the exhibit.

•Interacts with zoo guests to answer questions, guide guests, administer first aid, or enforce zoo policies.

•Assists in area training for new employees

•Maintains area compliance with AZA regulations and standards.

•Assist in the preparation and operation of special events after normal zoo hours as needed.

•Maintain accurate daily reports.

•Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

•This position routinely requires lifting and holding heavy objects (up to 75 lbs.)

•This position requires that incumbent can hold, lift, carry, or restrain animals as necessary.

•This position requires standing and walking around the Zoo for the majority of the day.

Minimum Qualifications:

•Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.

•1 year experience in animal care is required. Knowledge of exotic/reptile animal care is preferred.

•Experience in an AZA accredited institution is preferred.
