The Albuquerque BioPark currently has an opening for an Assistant Curator. ABQ BioPark is a city facility that consists of zoo, park, aquarium, and botanic garden. The 50-acre zoo was established in 1927 with very mature cottonwoods. Tingley Beach is a 33-acre park that connects the zoo with a 500,000 gallon aquarium and a botanic garden. The 45-acre botanic garden opened in 1996, and has a variety of trees, including ash, cottonwoods, oaks, and crabapples as well as 500 apple trees in a production orchard. The Cultural Services department, BioPark Division, is searching for a candidate skilled in arboriculture. Could you please help us get the word out about the opening? The person in this position will supervise a small but smart and hard-working crew, and their work could take them all over the BioPark to do tree work - at the zoo, botanic garden, or Tingley Beach. Maintaining the landscape at Tingley Beach is also part of the team’s assignment, and this Assistant Curator will oversee this area. The ability to assess tree health, including diagnosing and treating tree diseases, and experience with a chain saw and safety is required. It is preferred that the successful candidate has an ISA certification, or the ability to obtain one within a year of hire, as well as experience with irrigation design, installation and repair.

Minimum education and experience is a bachelor’s degree with major course work in a related field (or four years relevant experience – experience can be substituted for education), plus 3 years relevant managerial experience. The 40 hour-a-week position is mostly Monday – Friday, and pay is $17.36/hr for the probationary first six months, then the rate will be $18.80/hr (this rate is established by the City and is non-negotiable).
