Curator of Fishes

The Texas State Aquarium is actively recruiting a Curator of Fishes to manage the Aquarium’s Fish and Herpetology Department. The Texas State Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to inspire appreciation and wise stewardship of the Gulf of Mexico.

Essential Functions

The Curator of Fishes will direct and participate in the colleting, husbandry, and development of the fish and herpetology collection. Duties include animal and personnel management, exhibit care and maintenance, assisting with monitoring and management of the Aquarium’s water quality, and assisting veterinary staff with medical procedures. The Curator will participate in fish/herpetology-related media events, and deliver both on- and off-site presentations. This position is a member of the Senior Animal Husbandry staff and will report to the Director of Animal Husbandry.

Requirements

The successful candidate must be motivated, a self-starter, and enthusiastic; demonstrate excellent communication skills and team-building abilities. Prior supervisory experience required. The successful candidate must have advanced knowledge of fish/herpetology husbandry, must have an open water SCUBA certification, and must be able to lift 50 pounds. The Curator is regularly exposed to outside conditions in coastal Texas. A valid Texas Drivers License must be obtained within three months of employment.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, or a related degree required. A minimum of five years experience in aquarium husbandry at an AZA accredited aquarium or zoo is required. A minimum of three years staff supervisory experience including personnel management and training is required.
