Assistant Curator of Birds and Mammals

The Texas State Aquarium is actively recruiting an Assistant Curator of Birds and Mammals to manage the Aquarium’s bird and terrestrial mammal department and to participate in the collection planning/acquisitions for a capital expansion. The Texas State Aquarium is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to inspire appreciation and wise stewardship of the Gulf of Mexico.

Essential Functions

The Assistant Curator of Birds and Mammals will direct and participate in the training, husbandry, and development of the bird and terrestrial mammal collection. Duties include animal and personnel management, exhibit care and maintenance, assisting with the management of the Aquarium’s mixed species/free flight bird show, and assisting veterinary staff with medical procedures. The Assistant Curator will participate in bird/mammal-related media events, and deliver both on- and off-site presentations. This position is a member of the Senior Animal Husbandry staff and will report to the Director of Animal Husbandry.

Requirements

The successful candidate must be motivated, a self-starter, and enthusiastic; demonstrate excellent communication skills and team-building abilities. Prior supervisory experience required. The successful candidate must have advanced knowledge of bird and mammal husbandry/training and must be able to lift 50 pounds. The Assistant Curator is regularly exposed to outside conditions in coastal Texas. A valid Texas Drivers License must be obtained within three months of employment.

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology, or a related degree required. A minimum of five years experience in aquarium husbandry at an AZA accredited aquarium or zoo is required. A minimum of three years staff supervisory experience including personnel management and training is required.
