Interns work with our trainers to learn about husbandry, training, and education as the Animal Programs Department encompasses all of those areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Interns work with our trainers to learn about husbandry, training, and education as the Animal Programs Department encompasses all of those areas. Responsibilities will include cleaning, food preparation, animal observations, daily presentations, assisting with enrichment, public lorikeet feedings, observing or assisting in training sessions, and other duties as assigned. Interns may have the opportunity to participate in various workshops that cover basic training concepts and other relevant material to the animal behavior and care field.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be at least 18 years of age; able to lift 50 pounds; work both as a team and independently; self-starter with a positive attitude; ability to interact with the public; speak fluent English; and considering a career in the animal care field. Interns will be working around and possibly with a number of known allergens; including but not limited to peanuts, tree nuts, seafood, and latex.

All internships are unpaid and interns are expected to work for either three months (a total of 480 hours) or six months (a total of 960 hours). Interns enrolled in a six month internship will be given opportunities not available during a three month internship because of time constraints. Internship hours may be met by working a minimum of 24 hours a week. This can be flexible to work around school or job schedules. Housing is not provided. Interns are expected to start no later than the week of September 2nd, 2013. This internship is very competitive, and an application does not guarantee an interview. Chosen applicants must be able to pass the required PA Child Abuse History Clearance and the PA Criminal Record Check in order to have final acceptance as an intern.

If this is an opportunity that interests you, please forward your resume, cover letter, and references to Chris Gaus, Intern Coordinator, at chris.gaus@aviary.org. Please indicate a preference between a three month or a six month internship. Deadline to apply: 5:00PM ET, Sunday, July 28th, 2013.
