The Life Support Systems Operator (LSSO) is a Technical Position, responsible for the safe operation of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s Fresh-water and Seawater systems. The LSSO reports to the Life Support Systems Supervisor. The LSSO is expected to perform high quality work in support of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s mission.

General Duties:

Operation, backwashing and maintenance of high rate sand filters.

Operation and maintenance of ozone generators, compressors and peripheral equipment.

Operation and maintenance of untreated and disinfected seawater distribution systems.

Operation and monitoring of heater/chiller equipment.

Daily logging of operations, maintenance and water chemistries of life support systems.

Dosing of chemicals to provide the best quality water possible to all exhibits.

Participate in design, installation maintenance and operation of open and closed fresh water and seawater exhibits.

Cooperate with staff, volunteers and contractors.

Assist with strategic planning.

Any other duties in support of Aquarium activities as assigned by the Exhibit Manager or Aquarium Vice President.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science preferred , although technical degrees coupled with appropriate experience will also be considered.

Experience:

Minimum of three years of operating experience in a Public Aquarium Life Support Position or wastewater treatment facility preferred. Knowledge of aquatic animal husbandry preferred. The ability to work outside in all weather conditions as well as in tight quarters is mandatory.

Immigration Status: Ability to work legally in the United States.

Valid Florida Driver’s License: Required or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to safely lift 70 lbs

The ability to understand and follow safety protocols

Ability to swim

Proficiency in the use of hand and power tools

Computer knowledge (Word, Excel)

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Skilled in general water chemistry as it pertains to seawater aquaria

Capable of operating, maintaining, diagnosing and repairing mechanical systems

Ability to make logical decisions in critical situations

Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
