SUMMARY:

This is a responsible professional laboratory technical position. This position supports the veterinary and technical staff in all facets of clinical diagnostics, including pathology, clinical pathology and microbiology. This individual will work with the Hospital Operations Manager in maintenance and upgrade of on-site laboratory capabilities and in-house training of technical staff. This individual will be responsible for the quantity and quality of work performed in the laboratory.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

•Demonstrate leadership in accordance with Shedd’s mission and values

•Proficient in various diagnostic and clinical pathology skills performed in the Shedd’s in-house laboratory including gross necropsy, sample collection and bacterial cultures, hematology (WBC counts, differentials, table top serum chemistry analysis, etc.), cytology, and parasitology.

•Perform core microbiology responsibilities including standard plate counts, general diagnostic bacteriology and basic bacterial identification. Proficient in microbial culture, identification and antibiotic sensitivity testing. Act as backup for staff microbiologist.

•Provide training to other department staff in medical laboratory skills and safety.

•Maintain animal healthcare records in coordination with the department management team.

•Keep laboratory equipment in proper working condition by performing quality control and troubleshooting, schedule routine maintenance, prepare the lab for inspections, order wet and dry goods to restock laboratory, research new or replacement equipment.

•Other duties may be assigned.

Individual may be asked to cross train with Environmental Quality and Clinical Veterinary technicians. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

•Data management experience required.

•Strong interpersonal skills and work ethic required.

•Ability to multitask and work within a team management structure is essential.

•May be required to work weekend days or unusual hours or unscheduled days during emergency type circumstances.

•Background in exotic species preferred, though those with background in human medical technology will be considered.

•Experience or familiarity with molecular diagnostics preferred.

•Experience with ARKS/MedARKS is helpful.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Allied Health Technologies or related field required.

Experience: Three years clinical laboratory, zoo, or public aquarium required; four or more years preferred.

Designations/Certifications: CVT, RVT, LVT, AMT, or equivalent with appropriate experience preferred.

•Ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English fluently.

•Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions given from written and oral sources.

•Ability to write professional business correspondence.

•Ability to effectively present information to all levels of employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

•Ability to understand basic mathematical relationships and formulas.

COMPUTER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

•Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel or equivalents, including spreadsheet and database management required.

•Experience with ARKS/MedARKS is helpful.
