Exhibits Technician I-Coral and Jelly Aquarist

The Virginia Aquarium is seeking a jelly and coral aquarist.


High school or GED plus two (2) years' experience in fields such as marine science, aquarium science, fisheries management, zoology, zoo or public aquarium or science center exhibits work, or related field that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver's license eligibility requirements.


Provides for the needs of all animals in assigned area by doing regular daily feedings, maintaining water quality through operation of individual life support systems and administering treatments as directed by curatorial and veterinarian staff; maintains exhibit quality standards through regular maintenance and cleaning activities; performs animal husbandry and animal handling activities involving animal groups in the Aquarium's collection (including fishes, reptiles and aquatic invertebrates); keeps work area clean and organized and reports mechanical failures to supervisors in a timely way; keeps service areas clean, neat and well organized; keeps accurate records on all husbandry, training and water testing activities including daily care, animal health maintenance and observations, acquisition/disposition and mortalities; participates in collecting and quarantine activities when directed; researches and suggests upgrades, enhancements and changes to exhibit and life support systems to Curator; assists in the design and construction of new exhibits and life support systems; and cross-trains with other staff within the Fishes section. Participates in SCUBA diving operations for the purposes of collecting, exhibit maintenance, and animal husbandry related procedures. When directed, participates in Aquarium related programs including facility tours and lectures. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Bachelors of Science degree in aquarium science, behavioral sciences, marine ecology, biology or related field, AND at least 3 years paid husbandry experience in a public aquarium or zoo. Strong experience in coral, jellies, and invertebrate systems in a public aquarium or zoo. Experience with fish and aquatic invertebrate nutrition, health management, and disease recognition and treatment with concentration in jelly and soft and hard coral husbandry and propagation. Good record keeping and communication skills. Experience in behavioral training and enrichment of aquatic animals. Experience in closed system husbandry and maintenance. SCUBA certification to Open Water with experience SCUBA diving in exhibits. Experience in the collection, shipment, and transport of live animals including jellies and corals.
