The Toledo Zoo is a world renowned facility with a wonderful heritage of historic buildings from the Work Progress Administration era. The Zoo is home to more than 6,875 animals representing over 515 species, with an operating budget of over $22,500,000 and is currently recruiting for the position of Veterinarian / Director of Animal Health and Nutrition. Under limited supervision the Veterinarian is responsible for directly providing medical care and managing other animal health department staff in performing medical and surgical care of a diverse collection including a new aquarium scheduled to open in 2015. This includes developing a preventative medical care program, prescribing medication, medical diagnosis, conducting clinical pathology and post mortem evaluations, managing commissary operations, evaluating nutrition programs and diet formulations with curators, proving input on animal training and animal husbandry protocols, conducting biological related research, participating in field conservation project(s) and educating students in the veterinary profession. Also collaborates with other staff on exhibit designs, emergency animal protocols, and USDA Exhibitor’s License requirement. The veterinary hospital is well equipped with new anesthesia machines and ventilators, full clinical pathology lab, digital radiology, mammography machine and portable ultrasound .Candidate must be able to demonstrate effective communication and supervisory ability to manage a major zoo department. Effective interdepartmental communication skills are also necessary to assist other department staff, curators, zookeepers and education staff in attaining relevant goals, develops and administers the department budget. The criteria for meeting the minimal requirements include: a Doctoral degree in veterinary medicine and five years full-time experience in the zoo veterinary field, and must be able to obtain a State of Ohio Veterinary License, USDA veterinary accreditation and a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license, and Board eligible preferred.
