Nestled in the heart of beautiful Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium is a non-profit society internationally recognized as a leading visitor attraction, and one of Canada’s foremost centres for aquatic education, research and conservation. The Marine Mammal Rescue Centre is an off-site facility (in downtown Vancouver) for the rehabilitation process of ill, injured, and abandoned marine mammals that have been rescued along the British Columbia coastline.

Please note: Hours full time in summer months when more animals are on site, and may continue on call throughout the rest of the year, depending upon number of animals on site, and type of care required.

ROLE OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Manager, Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, the Veterinary Technician is responsible for the collection and transport of marine mammals, food preparation and feeding of animals, minor medical procedures/treatments, administering medication, record keeping, daily maintenance and cleaning of rehabilitation centre.

The Veterinary technician provides training and supervision of new staff members, volunteers, interns and veterinary externs, and education to the general public. This position assists the Veterinarian with daily routine and non-routine veterinary treatments, assistance and maintenance of medical equipment, diagnostic imaging, clinical pathology, treatment and diagnostic sampling in all areas of animal care. This position will involve the filing of records, data entry and the routine administrative duties that occur within the department.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Assists the Veterinarian with treatments by:

•Ensuring that day to day rounds are completed and communicated with team; patient observations, follow up, noting any variations and escalating issues;

•Assisting in routine veterinary procedures including anaesthesia, surgery, treatment, diagnostics, and necropsies;

•Providing veterinary care and feeding of marine mammals, medications and laboratory procedures; blood collection, physical exams, fluid administration, and wound care;

•Participating in research programs including collection, processing and storage of samples;

•Preparing prescriptions, dispenses and administers medication; quality control;

•Providing education information to general public as needed;

•Assisting in supervision and training of volunteers, interns, and new staff members;

•Providing off-site assessment and transportation of marine mammals in distress;

•Assisting in the preparation of animals for release to wild including tagging and micro chipping;

•Releasing rehabilitated animals.

Ensures the maintenance of medical equipment by:

•Assimilating record and manage data; maintaining administrative records; data entry, reports, phone records etc;

•General filing and cleaning as required Maintains and cleaning of facility;

•Maintaining organizational safety standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

•A Degree or Diploma in Animal Health Technology or equivalent credential. Previous experience with, wildlife or marine mammal species preferred;

•Current registration status with local AHT Association;

•Valid Driver’s License required;

•Able to lift 30kg animals.

Skills:

•Excellent animal handling, husbandry and technical skills;

•Excellent computer skills with respect to data entry, graphics programs, Word, Access and Excel. Skills in DOS based programs an asset;

•Essential knowledge in marine mammal anatomy and physiology;

•Able to work efficiently without supervision;

•Excellent problem solving skills; ability to think quickly under pressure and high stress;

•Ability to complete tasks and make sound decisions;

•Enthusiastic team player; effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;

•Excellent time management skills, with the ability to keep on task with strategic items while managing day-to-day responsibilities;

•Active demonstration of the company’s values and mission.
