Specifically, the Aquarium has an opening for a Water Systems Specialist. The Water Systems Specialist works under the general supervision of the Director of Applied Research (AR). The Water Systems Specialist performs routine monitoring and maintenance of specialty seawater systems. This position will work with the Director of AR, Facilities staff and outside contractors to design and implement life support and treatment systems. This position will work with AR staff to monitor MBA seawater and storm drain discharge; oversee systems flow monitoring and data summarization. This position performs a variety of other activates in support of applied research and the water quality laboratory.

Required:

Undergraduate degree in Biological Science, Engineering or Chemistry; of 2 years' experience working in an environmental, commercial or industrial position applying fluid systems (design, construction, operations, maintenance); Working knowledge of aquariums (home or commercial) and design/function of aquatic life support system components; Water system and mechanical engineering skills, including pump sizing, flow determinations, and reading/interpreting construction/engineering documents; Practical skills with hand and power tools used for light fabrication and mechanical maintenance; Practical skills in electronics, instrumentation, and computer hardware desirable; Basic working knowledge of techniques and instrumentation used in analytical seawater chemistry and microbiology desirable; Problem solving skills; Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to work independently and as part of a team; Working knowledge of computers and software used for word processing and database management (e.g., Microsoft Windows XP/7, Word, Excel and Access for Windows). Working knowledge of computer-aided design software (i.e., AutoCAD) desirable

Preferred:

The ideal candidate would have a minimum of 2 years experience with design, operation and maintenance of live animal life support systems – and have an understanding and appreciation for maintaining excellent water quality. Aquarium, Zoo or Aquaculture-related experience is preferred.
