The Gladys Porter Zoo has an opening in its Bird Department for a Head Keeper of Birds.

This is a position with real potential for advancement to a curatorial position.

The successful candidate will be responsible for daily animal care, including cleaning, diet preparation, feeding, enrichment, animal health monitoring, propagation, egg incubation, and exhibit maintenance.

Personality traits: Must be enthusiastic, self-motivated, and very flexible. Must be willing to assist zoo staff and general public, as necessary. Must be willing to become a member of a dedicated, hard-working team.

Physical requirements: Must be nimble – willing and able to climb ladders and walls, catch birds and carry heavy bales of hay. Must be physically fit and able to lift at least 50 pounds. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions.

Experience: Must have a minimum of four years experience working with a diverse collection of birds, and some supervisory skills/experience. BS preferred, but will accept a high school diploma or equivalent with experience along with excellent recommendations from previous employers. Starting pay is $12.50/hour with advancement opportunities.
