Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ is in search of talented, energetic and knowledgeable reptile keeper to work in the zoo’s herp & invertebrate department.

Candidates must be dependable, friendly and self starters; they must be familiar with, and competent in, life support systems, husbandry, capture and restraint, propagation, nutrition and proper record keeping of a wide variety of species.

Daily duties include: the observation of general animal health and behavior and reporting any abnormal situations to the zoo supervisor. The keeper will be responsible for general care, diet preparation and feeding of the collection as well as water quality, exhibit modification and design.

Additional duties include interacting with zoo visitors and presenting regularly scheduled programs to the public. The zoo opened a new reptile center in 2005 that houses a variety of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

Most work is indoors under very warm conditions, however must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be able to work weekends and holidays. Must have or be able to acquire a NJ driver’s license.

Must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 60 pounds). Good communication and organizational skills are a must. Candidates should have the ability to work well independently as well as with others in a team environment.

One year experience in a zoo setting preferred. Experience with venomous animals preferred. A degree in wildlife management, zoology, biology, marine biology or related field is preferred.
