Zoo Atlanta is seeking 4 Seasonal Keepers. This position is responsible for animal husbandry and maintenance of exhibit and holding areas for the Mammal Department. This department includes four main areas: carnivores, hoofstock, elephants, and outback station. The assigned work area will depend on the applicant’s experience and department needs. The position reports to the department’s Lead Keeper, Assistant Curator, and Curator.
The minimum length of this position is 12 weeks at 40 hours per week. The hourly pay rate is $10.50. This position does not include benefits.
Specific responsibilities include participating in daily husbandry, exhibit maintenance and visitor interaction programs, and observing and reporting animal behavior and health to supervisors and veterinary staff. The successful candidate is expected to maintain the highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and procedures, maintain a high performance level of general keeper duties including: excellent animal care, visitor interactions involving scheduled on-ground talks to guests, research facilitation, providing daily enrichment, and maintaining accurate computer based records. This position also requires working effectively as a member of a team.
Applicant must be at least 18 years of age. Four year degree in biology, psychology, or related field (sufficient relevant experience will be considered in partial fulfillment of education requirement) is preferred. Experience working with animals. Good written and oral communication skills and ability to interact with zoo visitors. Able to function as a team member and get along well with co-workers. Supportive of management goals and Zoo Atlanta’s mission. Must be willing to work flexible hours, weekends and holidays. Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather. Physical ability to perform strenuous work and lift at least 50 pounds. Must obtain and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
