Lincoln Park Zoo is looking for fun and creative educators with formal or informal teaching experience to join the Camp team as Camp Instructors. Instructors will provide children with meaningful and memorable summer learning opportunities by developing and teaching a variety of hands-on activities. Instructors will be responsible for teaching groups of 14 – 18 campers each week. Campers will be divided into groups depending on age and grade level from 4 years old to entering 4th grade. Instructors will teach Conservation Camp groups (for 4 year olds to those entering 4th grade in the fall). This is a full time seasonal position that will extend from May 29th – August 22th with a week off from July 2nd – 6th for the Independence Day holiday.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instructors will deliver content in a fun and unique way that will engage kids with the natural world around them. As well as, develop some components of the curriculum (Crafts, games, supplementary science content, etc.) Contribute to the zoo’s mission to connect children to nature. Responsible for maintaining a safe, well managed camp group experience. Communicate effectively and consistently with parents of campers. Work with co-instructor in a professional, effective, and cohesive manner. Accountable for accurate attendance sheets, accident reports, behavior reports, and timesheets. Serve as a mentor for the Camp Teen Volunteers assigned to the camp group.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Prior experience working with children in a formal or informal education setting. Excellent classroom management skills. Exceptional problem solving skills with the ability to adapt to changing environments. Outstanding organizational, logistic and operational skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Must be extremely trustworthy and punctual. Great sense of humor.
Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental studies, biology or working towards degree. Previous teaching or interpretation experience in a zoo, nature center, or other informal setting is preferred. Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access. Experience with digital photography software is a plus.
Able to remain on feet and walk for extended periods of time. Frequently bend, stoop, reach, lift heavy objects, and climb.
