The Erie Zoo is home to over 400 animals and participates in breeding programs for many species including Amur leopard, orangutan, gibbon, siamang, red panda, jaguar, black-footed penguin, Amur tiger, and more. The zoo is now accepting applications for the Summer internship program (May-August). Internships run a minimum of 12 weeks, are unpaid, and no housing is provided. The internship will provide practical hands-on experience for those interested in the animal keeping field. Interns will work alongside keeper staff in several different areas of the zoo learning animal care, exhibit upkeep, diet prep, enrichment, record keeping, behavioral training, public presentations, and assisting with veterinary procedures. Internship candidates must be working towards a degree in biology, zoology, animal behavior, or any other related field. Animal keeping is a physically demanding profession, and interns are subjected to a variety of physical and environmental challenges. Applicants must be willing and able to work in all types of weather, be able to lift at least 50 lbs., and will be required to have a TB test. Interns must be reliable, trustworthy and be able to follow oral and/or written instructions. Open to people 18 years old and older who can work a minimum of 4 days a week, 8 hours a day for a minimum of 12 weeks. Schedules are flexible and more hours may be available.
