A full-time Aquarist is now available in the Oceans Biome at the Indianapolis Zoo. Aquarist level (Assistant Aquarist, Aquarist, Senior Aquarist) is determined upon applicant’s experience level. Aquarists work with fish, invertebrates, aquatic birds, as well as help with special projects

Animals directly affected by this position include marine fish, invertebrates, smooth dogfish, and moon jellyfish. Applicants must have current SCUBA certification, or be able to acquire within six months of hire.

A minimum of one year professional work experience with direct knowledge of similar or related type work is strongly preferred.

The successful candidate must be highly motivated and, once trained, able to work independently with limited supervision. As part of a small, cohesive team, must also be able to function and make positive contributions as a team member. Must have proven decision making/problem solving skills, good observational skills. Must be temperamentally suited to working with animals. Must be safety oriented.

Additional duties include:

• Maintaining active status in the Indianapolis Zoo Scuba Diver program, unless excused by doctor's written request.

• Following all Indianapolis Zoo Safety procedures and policies

• Ability to understand water chemistry parameters

• Understanding of basic water filtration, and filter systems

• Assisting with small system plumbing duties

There are strenuous physical requirements of this position, including but not limited to:

• Ability to work outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions.

• Ability to perform very heavy work, exerting at least 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently.

• Ability to climb and maintain body equilibrium while performing various jobs.

• Excellent visual acuity and hearing required.

• Must be able to be successfully vaccinated against rabies

• Possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens. Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals (e.g. chlorine bleach, cleaning agents, etc.) Must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines.

This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, professional demeanor and professional appearance due to regular visitor contact, seasonal keeper chats, and media events.

The candidate should minimally possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. A bachelor degree from an accredited institution in Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, Wildlife Biology, or other life-science field is strongly preferred. Prior work experience at a zoo, aquarium, or amphibian/marine life care-related organization is strongly preferred.
