Description of Work:

Reporting directly to the Education Program Coordinator, this position is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensive set of youth and adult programs and field experiences for a wide range of audiences. These experiences include day programs, night programs, special activities, day camps and week-long summer camps. The position is responsible for ensuring that programs are operated efficiently, safely and in accordance with NC Aquariums guidelines and procedures. This position will be required to work outdoors and be comfortable in and around the water. This position will be responsible for: presenting age-appropriate curricula specific to school programs; serving as a resource for teachers and community members; evaluating education programs for effectiveness; and managing interns, and volunteers. Position works 40 hours per week and must be able to work nights, weekends and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities/Competencies:

This candidate must be highly motivated, energetic and capable of working independently. A high degree of resourcefulness and problem solving skills are necessary for the candidate to maintain public contact and respond to group requests. The candidate must display good judgment, be knowledgeable about existing programs and procedures and be flexible. This position requires excellent computer skills and oral and written communication skills. A working knowledge of natural history, environmental and marine education is also required. The candidate must display good interpersonal, time management, leadership, research, planning and organizing skills. The candidate must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from High School and two years of experience in a natural science field.

Preferred Experienced:

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in biology, zoology, botany, or other natural science curriculum or 3 years teaching experience in a natural science field, or an equivalent combination of education and teaching experience. Prefer the candidate to have experience with water sports and activities, i.e., fishing, kayaking, surfing, stand-up paddling, snorkeling and SCUBA. A valid North Carolina driver’s license is preferred. North Carolina Environmental Education Certification is desired. CPR/First Aid certification is preferred.
