Working closely with the Board of Directors and reporting to the CEO, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) will drive fundraising efforts and provide visionary leadership, management and strategic direction to develop sustainable support for the National Aquarium. As a member of the leadership team, the CDO will strengthen the National Aquarium brand, connect a broad array of donors using both traditional and modern development methods while implementing the infrastructure required for developing sustained annual stewardship and support. The CDO has the opportunity to build a staff of 12, including Director of Individual and Institutional Giving, Major Gifts, Membership and Development Services.

Qualified candidates will have a minimum of ten (10) years of increasingly responsible positions in development, with significant experience and success in major gifts and capital campaigns preferably within a museum, zoo, aquarium or other conservation-focused organization. The successful candidate will have a passion for the National Aquarium’s mission combined with the ability to design and implement the infrastructure required for developing sustained annual stewardship and support for the Aquarium. The CDO must have demonstrated ability to build, foster and maintain relationships with both internal and external constituencies along with effective leadership skills to motivate and inspire staff, setting high expectations and professional direction. Must have superior communication skills to express orally and in writing the National Aquarium’s mission and fundraising goals with clarity, passion and persuasion. Bachelor’s degree required, master’s degree in a relevant discipline desired. Must be willing and able to travel.
