ZOOKEEPER 400Starting Salary: $34,276 (2011 Rate)Application Deadline: 5:00 P.M., March 8, 2012Requested Documents: Resume, cover letter, copy of college transcripts and application_____________________________________________________ INGHAM COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION ZOOKEEPER 400 General Summary:Under the supervision of the Zoo Director and Veterinarian/Curator, performs a wide range of skilled work involving the care of animals. Identifies and treats minor injuries and illnesses. Maintains detailed, hand-written records. Cares for a variety of animals. Uses a variety of techniques to capture and move animals when required. Provides directions to visitors at the facility and answers questions, when possible, from members of the public. Cleans cages and operates a wide range of animal care equipment. May drive a truck with a horse trailer weighing in excess of 10,000 pounds. Essential Functions:1. Performs a wide range of skilled work involving the care of animals at the Zoo.2. Carries food and other supplies to cages and enclosures.3. Feeds, cleans, waters, bathes, and grooms domestic and exotic animals as directed on a regular basis using hand held equipment and other tools as required.4. Identifies minor injuries and illnesses and reports both verbally and in writing to veterinarian.5. Maintains detailed, hand-written, records, regarding the care of animals as directed.6. Uses a variety of techniques to capture and move animals when required.7. Cleans cages using brooms, scrub brushes, shovels, rakes and various chemical disinfectant compounds.8. Provides directions to visitors at the facility and answers questions, when possible from members of the public.9. Operates a wide range of animal care equipment including incubators, steam cleaners and a variety of trucks. May drive a truck with a horse trailer weighing in excess of 10,000 pounds. Employment Qualifications: Education: High School Diploma or GED with one (1) year of college level course work in animal husbandry.Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in the care of animals and the maintenance of facilities; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Other Requirements: * Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.* Knowledge of the methods and procedures used in the care of animals and the equipment used in zoo operations. * Knowledge of custodial duties relating to zoo operations. * Skill in preparing and maintaining records and reports. * Ability to communicate effectively and follow verbal and written instructions. Physical Requirements: * Ability to walk on various types of terrain in all climate conditions. * Ability to perform various types of maintenance and construction tasks necessary to build and maintain animal facilities. * Ability to climb stairs and ladders and regularly lift and haul equipment, tools, and supplies weighing from 25-50 pounds. * Ability to perform other routine physical functions like bending, sitting, standing, squatting, twisting, turning, grasping, scooping, etc. typical of zookeeper duties and employees.
