Palm Beach Zoo is seeking a bird keeper to assist with the direct care of a diverse collection of waterfowl, cranes, song birds, shore birds, wading birds and birds of prey as well as some mammal and reptile species that live in mixed species exhibits. The bird keeper will be assigned to exhibit and off exhibit bird areas to provide husbandry, monitor the health of the collection and provide upkeep of enclosures. Duties include feeding, cleaning, enrichment, animal training, observations, record keeping and capture/restraint. The bird keeper will be responsible for implementing breeding recommendations for the collection including documentation, communication with supervisors, setting up pairs for breeding and nest tracking. Duties may also include artificial incubation and chick rearing. Animal Keepers at Palm Beach Zoo engage visitors on a daily basis through formal and informal animal encounters. Palm Beach Zoo is seeking applicants that have a passion for conservation and a desire to engage and educate the public on conservation initiatives. The successful candidate will serve as a mentor to volunteers, interns and other staff in areas of bird husbandry and propagation, conservation and guest engagement. Applicants should possess excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, display a positive attitude, enjoy working on a team and have proficiency using Microsoft Office programs. Qualifications:Associates or Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or applicable field. Candidate must have a minimum of two years paid experience with birds in a zoological institution where they have demonstrated an understanding of avian physiology, propagation and experience with waterfowl.Appropriate experience may substitute for degree requirement. Must be physically able to stoop, bend, reach, climb, lift, carry or push at least 50 pounds in a south Florida climate. Must be able to work a schedule which includes weekends, holidays and special events.
