The Bird Department cares for 900+ birds housed in several areas of the zoo. Included is the 28,000 square foot indoor Jungle Building, Avian Propagation Facility, Incubation and the outdoor bird exhibits of North America, Asia and Africa. The Jungle Building is a large, indoor planted aviary with free flight birds, a large hornbill exhibit and a vampire bat colony. Our Avian Propagation Facility has 20 flights with indoor/outdoor access and several attached yards. The remaining area exhibits contain waterfowl, storks, cranes, pelicans, eagles and flamingo.

Job Objectives:

Monitors and participates in the care of zoo animals, grounds and facilities. Prepares and maintains records for all aspects of animal management. Provides customer service to zoo-defined customers. Performs all tasks using zoo resources for measurable productivity.

Job Standards:

Bachelors Degree from an accredited college university in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Science or a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required essential job functions.

Essential Job Functions:

Applicant should be competent and knowledgeable of animal science, behavior, nutrition, illness and reproduction. The principles and practices of zoo keeping including diet, housing exhibition and breeding of animals should be exhibited. Ability to observe, recognize and interpret normal and abnormal animal behavior. The successful applicant should have the ability to inspect animals and discern illness, injury or other disorders. Knowledge of the dangers and precautions to be taken in handling potentially dangerous animals will be required.
