The City of Idaho Falls is currently accepting applications for the position of Seasonal Zoo Keeper with the Tautphaus Park Zoo. This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties related to the care and maintenance of domestic animals in the children’s zoo, the repair and maintenance of zoo facilities and grounds, the supervision of teenage and adult volunteers and the interaction with zoo guests.

Tautphaus Park Zoo anticipates hiring two Seasonal Keepers to work approximately April 1 - October 6, 2013. It is anticipated the positions will work approximately 24-40 hours per week.


Prepares animal feed and feeds animals according to specified diets; observes general health, behavior and condition of animals; cleans and disinfects animal enclosures and exhibits. Reports in writing or verbally to supervisor all problems concerning the animal collection, zoo facilities and grounds within the children’s zoo. Maintains appropriate records including, but not limited to daily animal behavior, feed schedules, dietary needs, health problems, treatment schedules.

Trains and oversees participants in the Jr. Zoo Crew youth volunteer program; interacts with the public while monitoring children’s zoo to insure that safety regulations regarding animals, public, and zoo grounds are followed; assists in the set up and implementation of zoo birthday parties; staffs animal contact yard throughout the day.


1. Education and Experience:

A. Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an ability or aptitude to perform above duties; previous course work and/or interest in biology/zoology desirable.


B. Prior experience working with animals, providing customer service, and working with basic maintenance repair tools desirable.


C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Required knowledge, skills and abilities: Knowledge of the general care and maintenance of animals. Some knowledge of public speaking including the ability to give presentations to small groups.

Ability to understand and follow routine verbal or written instructions; ability to follow established policies and procedures related to the care and maintenance of animals; ability to communicate effectively with fellow employees, supervisors and the public.

3. Special Qualifications:

Must be able to work any of the 7 days of the week including weekends, holidays and evenings; must be able to lift 50 lbs.
