The Curator of Animals scientifically manages the animal collection consistent within the mission and goals of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Collaborates with the Conservation and Science Department on projects both within the Zoo and in the wild. With the assistance of the Associate Curator(s) of Animals, manages the animal keeper staff. Partners with other departments and divisions both within the zoo and within the larger Metroparks organization.


Under the direction of the General Curator of Zoological Programs, develops and implements programs for acquisition, deacquisition, husbandry, exhibition, and reproduction of the animal collection consistent with the Zoo’s mission and goals, short-term and long-term plans, Animal Collection Plan, and the Zoo’s guidelines. Recruits, selects, trains and evaluates the Associate Curator(s) of Animals and Animal Keepers. Serves as the Point of Contact for all inquiries from other divisions or stakeholders, including Facility Operations, Marketing, Education, Guest Services, Zoological Society, and the Park District, as well as external sources related to their collection. Provides the registrar with all necessary current and historical information for species within the Zoo’s collection, in order to maintain accurate animal records. In cooperation with Veterinary Services, assures the health and nutrition of the animal collection. In conjunction with Facility Operations, Horticulture, Education, and Zoological Programs staff, assures that each exhibit is aesthetic, functional, safe, educational, and consistent with Cleveland Metroparks Zoo’s mission and goals. Participates in planning, design and project management, as appropriate, of new exhibits and renovation of existing ones. Assists in the development and management of the operating and capital budgets. Performs related duties as apparent or assigned.


Bachelor degree in Biology, Zoology, or related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience

Six years of progressive responsibilities in operations involved in supporting an exotic animal collection, including three years of supervisory (including overseeing and planning) related experience required. Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license. Demonstrated technical skills relating to acquisition, de-acquisition, husbandry, exhibition, and reproduction of animal collections; proven scientific skills. Demonstrated management skills, including communication (oral and written), problem solving, visioning, participative management style, collaboration, leadership, and decision making to analyze diverse facts, develop clear concise reports & recommendations. Possess working knowledge of state and federal exotic animal permitting and certifications. Must be non-smoker/tobacco user.

FULL SALARY RANGE: $59,957 - $89,935/Annually. Typical Hiring Salary: $59,957 - $74,946/Annually.
