Position Summary: The Animal Science: Livestock Department is seeking a highly motivated, safety conscious individual with a strong work ethic and background in animal care to join our team. The Livestock department works hands on with large animals and facilitates guest interactions with these animals so guest, handler and animal safety must always be a priority. Applicants must be available to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays and after hours events. Job Duties & Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily care and husbandry of horses, budgies and petting zoo animals, in addition to working animals and assisting guests at the lama, and pony rides as well as the pony safari. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, daily husbandry and feeding of animals in the collection, keeping animal exhibit, off-exhibit and ride areas clean and in good repair, behavioral enrichment and training, behavioral observations, accurate record keeping, assist veterinary staff as needed, respond to emergency situations (code 1,2,3,4,6), safely operate utility vehicles, and provide guidance and assist in training less experienced staff.

Skills Needed: Qualified applicants must be comfortable working alone and in a team environment, possess excellent written and oral communication skills, have an understanding of animal husbandry, be familiar with operant conditioning training principles, be self-motivated with the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment while striving to give every zoo guest a positive customer experience. Must be able to use a radio, lift 50 pounds, move heavy objects, work on your feet all day and work outdoors year round in the typical Florida climate.

Education/Experience: Preference will be given to candidates who have earned or are working on a degree in Biology, Animal Science, Zoology or a related field. Prior animal care experience is necessary; employment or intern experience in an AZA accredited facility and/or experience working with horses is preferred.

Physical Requirement: Ability to life 50 pounds, work in extreme weather conditions, bend, lift, rake, sweep, shovel, traverse zoo grounds, spend extended periods of time on your feet, and possess visual acuity appropriate for animal care and general safety practices.
