Organization: Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium
Location: Sarasota, FL, United States
Job or Internship: Internship
Mote Marine Laboratory’s Manatee Care, Training, and Research program is responsible for the day to day care, training, and research for two resident manatees. Interns will be given the opportunity to gain hands on experience in the field of marine mammal training and research. Participants will work directly with staff, assisting in all aspects of the manatee care program. Primary responsibilities include assisting with husbandry and behavioral research training, designing and implementing a research project, creating an environmental enrichment device, and interacting with the public. Duties include food preparation, water quality testing, operation of life support systems, upkeep of the exhibit, and cleaning. Other tasks may include data entry, lab work, and miscellaneous office chores. Interns should be able to handle high levels of responsibility, demonstrate self-motivation, and be able to work independently.
Coursework in biology, zoology, psychology, ecology, or animal behavior is required. Previous experience training animals and/or working with marine mammals is beneficial but not necessary. Current SCUBA certification and DAN insurance is encouraged. Computer skills are helpful and a willingness to learn is a must! Interns must be able to lift 50 pounds and tolerate the flora and fauna of Florida.
Interns must be able to commit 40 hour per week for a minimum of three months. Occasional early morning and night hours may be required to meet the manatee care and training schedule, so it is important for interns to have reliable transportation to and from Mote as these times may not allow for use of Sarasota's public transportation system.
The summer application deadline for this program is March 1st. To apply, go to www.mote.org/interns. Fill out an online application, and select "Manatee Care, Training & Research" as your first choice program.
