The Oklahoma City Zoo is looking for a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and motivated leader to join our progressive reptile and amphibian team. Oklahoma City is among the most economically healthy cities in the nation and living expenses remain comfortable. This individual will oversee and work alongside four animal care staff to manage the day-to-day operations of the Reptile and Amphibian Department. Responsibilities include: fostering a positive, professional team atmosphere; overseeing and participating in the daily care of a diverse collection of more than 130 species of reptiles, amphibians, and birds in the Herpetarium, Island Life, and Oklahoma Trails exhibits; training assigned staff on area husbandry and safety protocols; record keeping; establishing and maintaining animal enrichment and training programs; and positively interacting with the public and other zoo staff. A desire to increase knowledge in the field by participating in scientific meetings and conferences and participate in the zoo’s field conservation projects is expected. Applicants must have proven enthusiasm for our profession and institutional goals, a solid background in reptile and amphibian biology and venomous animal handling procedures, excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to recognize, and in cooperation wit veterinary staff, address accordingly any animal health issues. Weekend and holiday shifts are expected.
REQUIREMENTS: Experience equivalent to five years full time animal care/animal husbandry work in a zoological setting, at least one year of which involved supervisory or lead worker responsibilities AND completion of a Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Animal Husbandry, Animal Science, or closely related field may substitute for two years of the required non-supervisory experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed in this job description. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Oklahoma motor vehicle operator’s license and pass a Driver’s History check to operate Zoo vehicles. Must successfully complete a pre-employment background check, a physical examination, and a drug test and have the ability to pass annual TB tests.
The salary range is $16.12-$20.15 per hour with excellent benefits.
