Do you have an interest in teaching science, working with kids, and inspiring the next generation of critical thinkers? Being a CuriOdyssey Science Day Camp Leader may be the position for you. Exploring the beach, building a catapult, or feeding and caring for the animals in our zoo are just some of the unique activities our leaders facilitate with campers. Here is more information about this wonderful opportunity to provide up-close and personal experiences with the natural world.

Role of a Science Day Camp Leader:

Science Day Camp Leaders are facilitators of the camp program and activities, leading in a way that is engaging, fun, and safe. They serve as role models for campers, establishing a foundation of knowledge, providing tools for personal discoveries, modeling inquiry, and creating meaningful learning experiences.

Science Day Camp Leaders share their expertise in one of Camp CuriOdyssey’s Science Camps.

Earth Explorers Camp- Earth Sciences (Kinder – 4th grade)

Gadgets and Gizmos Camp- Physical Sciences (Kinder – 4th grade)

Junior Keepers/Zoo U. Camp- Life Sciences (Kinder – 8th grade)

Outdoor Adventures Camp- Place-Based Environmental Science (Kinder – 4th grade)

Growing Scientists- Preschool Science (3-4 year olds)

Responsibilities of a Science Day Camp Leader:

o As a Science Day Camp Leader you are the primary facilitator of camp activities and engage campers in meaningful educational experiences.

o The Science Day Camp Leader must understand the camp content (including the science) and how to lead campers through activities in a way that is engaging, exciting, and distinctive.

o Science Day Camp Leaders work closely with Leaders in Training (youth volunteers), ensuring that campers have a safe and fun learning environment.

o There may be projects and tasks that arise that may be delegated or taken on by Science Day Camp Leaders, such as providing support to other camps.

Who We Are Seeking as a Science Day Camp Leader:

A Science Day Camp Leader reflects CuriOdyssey’s institutional personality and values. A successful Science Day Camp Leader is responsible for a small group of campers, understands the camp content, is a positive role model, and is creative, curious, and responsible. An effective Science Day Camp Leader understands and respects learners of different ages, recognizes that learning is a process not a product, and is committed to provide the tools and guidance to make that process authentic, fun, and engaging.

Past experiences that are helpful include: having taught and worked with groups in an informal educational institution or camp program, flexibility when working in a fast-paced work environment and with an eclectic work team, and having had a positive learning experience such as the ones a Science Day Camp Leader is expected to create.
