Chimp Haven is seeking a proven supervisor and professional to serve as Animal Care Supervisor in the Husbandry Department. The ideal candidate will possess proven leadership abilities. Supervises the staff caring for the chimpanzees and their housing areas and improves wellbeing and prevent disease by close observation of chimpanzee behavior and careful cleaning procedures. Reports to senior management.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Supervises the work of the animal care staff.
• May hire and train animal caregivers on primary responsibilities.
• Develop work schedules ensuring adequate personnel to accomplish daily responsibilities safely.
• May complete performance reviews.
• Develop standard operating procedures.
• Work closely with Colony Manager/Animal Care Director to ensure organizational and animal care objectives are achieved.
• Assist with feeding and cleaning chimpanzees as necessary.
• Observe chimpanzee behavior and appearance. Report unusual behavior or injuries.
• Prepare/transport food, bedding or supplies.
• Oversee maintenance of records of health, behavior, cleaning, etc. Respond to reports from care staff.
• Ensure compliance with enrichment and training objectives.
• May oversee ordering supplies and maintaining stock of feed, bedding and cleaning supplies.
• May administer medications and treatment as needed under supervision.
• May assist behavioral or veterinary staff as directed.
• Participate in and may lead educational programs.
• May attend cross departmental meetings, assist in planning and implementing special projects, including educational programs.
• Perform related duties as required.
Supervision and Responsibility
• Supervises and coordinates the work of animal care staff.
• Trains and supervises volunteers.
• Reports to senior management.
• Knowledgeable about variety of the field’s concepts, practices and procedures. Performs a variety of complicated tasks.
• Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
• A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.
Education and Experience
• Associates degree in related field, veterinary technician degree or AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician certification required.
• Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
• At least 8 years experience working with animals, including 6 years working with nonhuman primates and 3 year working with chimpanzees required.
• A combination of 10 years related education and nonhuman primate/chimpanzee experience can be substituted for education/experience requirements.
• Three year’s experience in supervisory role at an animal facility is required.
• Working knowledge of general computer software programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, data entry).
Other requirements and working conditions
• This work will require bending, carrying, kneeling, lifting, listening, pulling, pushing, reading, speaking, squatting, standing, stooping, stretching, walking, watching and writing.
• Must be able to routinely lift and carry 50 lbs for short distances. Must be able to assist in lifting chimpanzees (up to 75 lbs.).
• Duties may require driving Chimp Haven vehicles, and must have a valid driver’s license and meet Chimp Haven’s motor vehicle operating standards.
• Work may involve considerable outdoor work in various weather conditions.
• Potential exists for animal bites and scratches.
• Potential exposure to unpleasant odors, animal wastes, animal tissues and body fluids, toxic chemicals, zoonotic diseases (tuberculosis, shigella etc.), infectious agents (Hepatitis B,C, HIV, etc.).
• Weekend, holiday and night work may be necessary.
• Participation in a medical monitoring and surveillance program that includes hepatitis B and other inoculations is required.
• Safety training, equipment, clothing and supplies will be provided.
