Position Description: Assist with behavioral endocrinology research projects being conducted at Disney’s Animal Kingdom®. Report to the Research Manager in Endocrinology and work as part of the team to design and implement studies on captive animal reproduction and management covering a variety of topics including pregnancy, contraception and stress. Perform in-house enzyme-immunoassays (EIA). Assist with database management, statistical analysis, and publication writing.The Science Team works with the Department of Animal Health and the Animal care staff to develop research projects, implement studies, analyze data, interpret results and disseminate information to relevant parties. Major Duties and Responsibilities* Collect and /or analyze hormone samples (EIA) and behavioral data according to established methodologies* Assist in development, validation and maintenance of EIA systems, including antibody development, preparation of reagents and buffers* Assist in maintenance of chemical hygiene and waste management* Assist in design of studies* Works in close association with other members of the Science Team* Participate in training data collectors* Participate in Guest interactions a minimum of once a week* Communicate research results in staff seminars, scientific journals, conference presentations, and popular publications* Participate in relevant conferences and meetingsTerm: One year contract appointment (with 6 month initial probationary period) beginning as soon as March 2013 as an independent contractor with possible renewal for a second year. This position is a Research Fellowship through New College of Florida based at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Applicant must be able to work in the United States. Employer will not pay fees associated with relocation or visa/work permit applications.Qualifications:* Ph.D. or Ph.D. candidate (defending within 6 months of start date) in endocrinology, biological chemistry, or related field* Demonstrated experience in enzyme immunoassay systems* Excellent written and oral communication skills for both formal and informal audiences* Demonstrated ability to publish scientific research in peer-reviewed journals* Experience conducting research in a captive setting * Strong experimental design and analytical skills, especially dealing with small sample sizes* Experience using standard statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS)* Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented atmosphere, in an open laboratory in view of the publicPreferred skills:* Aquatic and/or large terrestrial species research experience* Experience in protein and steroid:enzyme label conjugations (HRP, biotin)* Experience with specialized equipment such as: Biomek 3000, HPLC, TLC* Experience working in zoos/aquariums * Experience conducting behavioral research Email cover letter, CV, sample publications, one letter of reference and the names and contact information for two additional references to:Catharine J.
