Keeper - Interpretive Animal Collection (F/T)

Position Summary:

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum's Interpretive Animal Collection Department seeks an enthusiastic person to join their team. This keeper will help oversee the daily care of about 70 animals representing 35 species of small wild animals and coordinate their use in education programming. About half the work will be with animals and half with people. The animal work will include enclosure cleaning, food preparation, feeding, health care, record keeping and operant conditioning. The work with people will include training docents to handle and care for animals, training and supervising animal care volunteers and coordinating with Museum staff from many other departments. This keeper will act as MC in a theater presentation with animals as well.


The candidate must be team oriented, sensitive and courteous. S/he must have strong interpersonal and public speaking skills as well as a strong background in captive wild animal care. Knowledge of operant conditioning and in the natural history of Sonoran Desert region is highly desirable. Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school and at least two years’ work experience (preferably paid) in an AZA-accredited facility; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. The person must be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. S/he must be able to work weekends and holidays as required.

Initial Step: $13.64/hr.
