Position Summary:

The Senior Animal Keeper for Africa functions as the on-site lead and coordinator with day-to-day responsibility for the Zoo’s animal care team in the Africa area of the zoo. This position is responsible for leading, assigning, overseeing and monitoring the work of Animal Keepers, interns, volunteers and other staff; advancing area and overall zoo animal care, including safety, health, enrichment and training; keeping the area in top operating and professional condition; and enhancing overall education and experience.

Senior Animal Keepers lead, collaborate, guide and/or perform breeding, conservation, and research projects; lead and participate in the development and implementation of improved plans, protocols, and procedures; oversee and perform emergency service functions; and may perform designated duties of Animal Keepers or supervisory personnel.

Minimum Requirements:

A bachelor's degree in biology, zoology or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Five years progressively responsible animal keeper experience with a wide variety of African mammals including wild dog, lion, cheetah, giraffe, various hoofstock, and a variety of reptiles and amphibians. Experience in a lead capacity at a zoo, public aquarium or similar institution.

This position requires:

- experience acting in a lead capacity, assisting with establishing procedures and protocols, and enforcing established procedures and protocols to ensure a safe working environment

- training and planning experience

experience with animal behavior training and enrichment

- a valid driver’s license and First Aid/CPR certification.
