Animal Care Specialist
The Racine Zoo is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic professional to join our experienced team! The qualified candidate will work well in a team setting, possess strong observational, written, and oral communication skills and accurate record keeping abilities, and be highly adaptable, as he/she may work in multiple animal areas but experience with rhinos and giraffes is required, camels is a plus. Applicants must be willing to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays in a variety of adverse weather conditions, and interact with Zoo guests in a positive way. This position is part-time (up to 30 hrs/week).
The Animal Care Specialist is responsible for daily husbandry of animals as it relates to the animal’s physiological and psychological well being, and for the general maintenance of grounds and exhibits. Experience in operant conditioning is desirable, as this person will also provide training and enrichment to animals under the guidance of the Behavior Management Committee.
Minimum qualifications/requirements: bachelor's degree in biology, zoology, or related field; one year experience working with animals in an AZA accredited zoo required; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to accept direction and work as part of a team; ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
