Zoological Supervisor: Mammals – Elephants and Ungulates

Zoo Miami is accepting resumes for the position of Zoological Supervisor; Elephants and Ungulates in the Mammal Department. This position reports to the Curator of Mammals, directly supervises four (4) Area Managers (including the elephant manager,) responsible for approximately twenty five (25) zookeepers, twenty seven (27) species of ungulates, Asian and African elephants.

Successful candidates will possess strong supervisory, organizational, and team building skills; and will manage Senior Keepers and Keepers in the breeding and husbandry of a diverse collection of mammals. Duties include training, scheduling and supervising animal care staff, developing, implementing and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures related to the care and management of the animal collection.

This position requires assisting the Curator in managing animal transactions, assuring departmental adherence to all institutional, local, state, federal, international, USDA and AZA regulations and guidelines. In cooperation with the Curator and staff Veterinarian oversees preventative, routine and emergency health care to the animal collection. In cooperation with the Maintenance department, inspects and follows through with all necessary repairs within the department Ideal candidate will also have experience in creating naturalistic environments including proper care and placement of live plants, heavy equipment operation, and animal capture and restraint.

Miami-Dade County minimum qualifications include a High School diploma, four years experience within an AZA accredited zoological park with at least one year of supervisory experience. Preference will be given to candidates with a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in one of the life sciences with zoological experience above preferably obtained within an AZA accredited institution.

Pay range is $37,408.54 – $59,872.80 per year.
