Posted Date: November 15th, 2012
Closing Date: December 15th, 2012
Anticipated Start Date: Late February, early March 2013

The Natural Science Center of Greensboro will have an opening for the newly created full time position of Penguin Specialist. This is considered a Keeper 2 position and will report directly to the Curator of Birds and Mammals.

The Penguin Specialist, under the direction of the Curator, will have primary responsibility for the African penguin exhibit in the new (but not yet open) SciQuarium. This exhibit will be a newly established colony of 13 individuals to start. Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: developing and implementing general husbandry protocols (diets, feeding techniques, cleaning, preventative health, operant conditioning, enrichment, etc), managing social dynamics and breeding pairs, chick rearing, supervision of relief keepers and interns, and public education/interaction. In addition to penguins, the area will also house fishing cats, Asian small-clawed otters, golden lion tamarin, and sloth. Any additional experience with these species would be desired. The penguin specialist will be expected to be primary keeper in all mentioned areas and should expect this to be a fully hands-on position. Because this is a new exhibit, this position will also have some opportunity to help outfit the exhibits and service areas before use.

The minimum education requirement for this position is an associate degree in zookeeping/animal husbandry or a B.S. in a related field. Either must be from an accredited program. Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years experience working with penguins in an AZA accredited facility and be well-versed in the particulars of penguin husbandry. The salary range for this position will be dependent on experience. The Natural Science Center of Greensboro also offers a full benefit package including medical and dental insurance, retirement, and paid holiday and annual leave.

If interested, please send a cover letter, resume, and references either by mail to: Penguin Specialist, Department of Human Resources, Natural Science Center, 4301 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro, NC 27455 or by email to employment@natsci.org. Applicants chosen for interview will be notified by January 15th, 2013. No phone calls please.

The Natural Science Center is an equal opportunity employer.
