Internships Offered at the Akron Zoological Park
The Akron Zoological Park is pleased to offer internship opportunities in the Communication and Education Departments. We are seeking highly motivated individuals that are looking for experience in the zoo field. Good public speaking skills and a sense of humor are a must for all internships. Applicants must be actively enrolled in college, or a recent college graduate. Preference is given to those studying a major relating to the internship. Internships are unpaid and housing, transportation, and background check fees are the responsibility of the intern.
Communication Internship ((One position available during the spring and summer semesters)
The Akron Zoo is seeking a highly motivated individual that is looking for experience in the Communications field. Good communication, computer and writing skills are a must. Interns must be available to work up to 20 hours per week, including two weekend days per month to assist with events and group sales.
Animal Training and Enrichment Internship (One position available during the summer semester)
Animal Enrichment and Training Interns must be able to consistently work 4 days per week and at least 4 – 6 hours per day to establish a working relationship with the zoo’s education animals. Some of the responsibilities of the intern include providing enrichment for the animals, presenting animal encounters to the public, researching and reviewing enrichment data, and assisting education staff in the training of show animals, and show preparations. Prior knowledge of basic operant conditioning and training is preferred. Applicants must be able to lift 50 pounds and prior animal handling experience is required for this internship.
General Education Internship (One position available per semester)
General Education Interns must be able to work at least 20 hours a week and have a working knowledge of curriculum development. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and evaluation of new curriculum, including distance learning, outreach, and on-grounds programming, and assist with project research and data analysis.
Guest Experience Internship (Two positions available during late spring - summer)
Guest Experience Interns must be able to work at least 32 hours a week and have experience in public speaking. Interns will have the opportunity to assist with on-grounds programs, zoo tours, providing Zoo Talks and educational displays for zoo visitors as well as helping to monitor teen volunteers at the Touch Tank.
Graphic Design Internship (One position available per semester)
Graphic Design Interns must be able to work at least 10 hours a week and have a working knowledge of graphic design software, including Adobe PageMaker and Adobe Creative Suite 2. Interns will assist the education department as well as other departments in the design of brochures, educational booklets, flyers, media announcements, video media, and other written communication.
ZooCamp Internship (Four – six positions available during the summer semester)
ZooCamp is a summer program for 6 – 16 year olds. A variety of topics are offered throughout the summer. ZooCamp Interns must be able to work a minimum of 32 hours per week and have a working knowledge of curriculum development. Interns will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and evaluation of new ZooCamp curriculum and assist camp staff with educational activities, crafts, animal encounters, and classroom management.
Animal Enrichment Team Internship (one position available per semester)
The Akron Zoological Park is a leader among both large and small zoos in the implementation and maintenance of enrichment programs for exhibit and education animals. Animal Enrichment Team Interns must be able to work a minimum of 15 hours per week. Interns will assist with the construction of enrichment items for exhibit animals, organization and implementation of activities during Enrichment Day, research and develop enrichment activities and fund raising projects, review enrichment programs, assist with paperwork, and work closely with keepers on larger projects.

Background checks are $7.25.
