COLUMBUS, OH 11 September 2003 -- The American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) today honored the Detroit Zoological Institute with a Significant Achievement Award in the Exhibit category for “Arctic Ring of Life.” Zoo officials accepted the award at the AZA's 79th Annual Conference meeting here this week.

The Arctic Ring of Life sets the new benchmark for state-of-the-art in captive Polar bear care, management and exhibition. Combining the largest and most unique polar bear facility in the world with exhibit interpretation that ties in the Arctic's vast and varying landscape and the other animals and people that live there, this $14.9-million showcase engages visitors in the complex interrelationships between Arctic people and animals. The highlight of the experience is the spectacular Polar Passage, a 70-foot-long, clear acrylic underwater tunnel that winds through the exhibit's vast marine environment, affecting visitors with its breathtaking views of Polar bears and seals swimming overhead.

Other exhibit elements include the large, grassy tundra and expansive Pack Ice exhibits for bears, the Nunavut gallery, in which visitors are surrounded by Inuit art while they experience underwater views of Polar bears and seals, and the Exploration Station, a replica of an Arctic research outpost that offers hands-on interactive activities as well as above- and below-water views of seals and Polar bears. Through its visitor experiences, conservation education, and research and rescue activities, The Arctic Ring of Life is promoting awareness of and helping to shape public attitude toward the people and wildlife of the Arctic.

The Exhibit Award is presented by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association for outstanding dedication to conservation issues, construction of exhibit space and replication of species natural habitats.
