Monterey Bay Aquarium Wins 2002 Top Education Award FORT WORTH, TX 13 September 2002 -- The American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) today honored the Monterey Bay Aquarium, with the Association's top Education Award for the “Splash Zone Education Programs.” Aquarium officials accepted the award at a special presentation during AZA's 78th Annual Conference, meeting here this week. Splash Zone Education Programs ©Monterey Bay Aquarium The Splash Zone Education Programs engage very young children, their teachers, parents and other family members in fun learning activities, all built around the experience of a visit to the aquarium's “Splash Zone” exhibit galleries. By providing a safe place to explore, and by encouraging significant adults to be involved in their explorations, the programs use young children's natural curiosity and sense of wonder to plant the seeds for a life-long sense of caring and respect for the environment. Specific programs range from a successful partnership with regional Head Start centers that serve low-income Hispanic families; summer institutes for educators; creation of Splash Zone-related education materials; and on-site programs for school groups. Notably, all the programs were created in collaboration with exhibit designers, parents, musicians, artists, early childhood experts, and educators. Each year, AZA recognizes achievement in the area of education by offering competition among its Institution, Related Organization and Society members. Judging is conducted by a panel of individuals selected by the Conservation Education Committee. The American Zoo and Aquarium Association was founded in 1924 and currently represents 208 accredited zoos and aquariums in North America. AZA's mission is to support membership excellence in conservation, education, science and recreation.
