TAMPA, FL September 29, 2006 Today the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) honored the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium (Tacoma, Wash.) with the association’s top Education Award for its Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater live animal program. The institution’s officials accepted the award in front of thousands of their professional colleagues at the AZA's 82nd Annual Conference, meeting here this week. AZA honored the institution with this award in honor of their contributions to help achieve AZA’s vision of building North America’s largest wildlife conservation movement.

The Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater live animal program is a fresh approach to live animal programming that encourages visitors to get outdoors and in nature. In a fast-paced 30-minute show, presenters model outdoor activities, such as mountain biking, snowshoeing and birdwatching. Surprise appearances by a variety of animals from appropriate environments are woven throughout the program. Since its debut in April 2004, more than 400,000 visitors have enjoyed this innovative program.

Each year, AZA recognizes achievement in the area of education by offering competition among its Institution, Related Organization and Society members. Judging is conducted by a panel of individuals selected by AZA’s Conservation Education Committee.
