CHICAGO, IL, September 18, 2005 – The American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) today honored the Denver Zoological Foundation with the AZA Diversity Award for "Wonders in Nature - Wonders in Neighborhoods" program. Zoo officials accepted the award at the AZA's 81st Annual Conference, meeting here this week.

Denver Zoo diversity program Denver Zoo's Wonders in Nature - Wonders in Neighborhoods (W.I.N.-W.I.N.) Program brings expertise and resources to underserved populations which traditionally do not experience open-space surroundings or exposure to and appreciation of wildlife and natural environments.

All researched-based components are "user-friendly," as identified by classroom teachers to maximize participation, and aligned with Colorado and national content standards. Parents chaperone field trips and attend Family Days.

The Program's comprehensiveness incorporates multi-year academic interdisciplinary content, educator training, pre- and post- instructors' visit curriculum activities, field trips, family involvement, and partnerships with 26 schools' and 10 districts' staffs and 41 other institutions and agencies on behalf of nearly 10,000 elementary students annually.

The Diversity Award is presented by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association for outstanding dedication to diversity initiatives both within zoological facilities, as well as for our visitors.
