Field ConservationCommunity-based Conservation and Hunting Sustainability in the Bosawas Biosphere Reserve
©Saint Louis Zoo The Bosawas Biosphere Reserve in Nicaragua is home to the Miskito and Mayangna, indigenous peoples whose traditional hunting practices have caused little habitat disturbance. However, immigrant farmers moving into the area are using unsustainable slash and burn methods, which cause irreversible damage to the land. Cheryl Asa and Louise Bradshaw of the Saint Louis Zoo used a CEF grant to conduct a biodiversity inventory in the Reserve. The data will be analyzed by zoologists, botanists, ecologists, an anthropologist, and a modeler. The results will be used to created a Wildlife Management Plan for wildlife protection and recovery. | ||||
