What thoughts occur behind the eyes of this orangutan from Louisville Zoo? It is no wonder that "orangutan" translates to "man of the forest" in the Malay language. This highly intelligent primate, the only great ape from Asia, is perilously close to extinction due to the logging and mining of its habitats - particularly illegal logging in national parks.

To help protect this remarkable species, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums, working with the AZA Ape Taxon Advisory Group, extend their efforts around the globe to assist conservation groups and government wildlife departments in Sumatra, Indonesia, and Borneo.
