Honorable Mention: Beluga Whale

AZA Institution: Shedd Aquarium
A beluga whale swims serenely through Shedd Aquarium's Oceanarium, which offers visitors a chance to see and hear these extraordinary "canaries of the sea." Such close encounters not only build appreciation for the whales, but also allow researchers to study their behavior, reproduction, and physiology in order to improve standards of care for whales in aquariums, and to support conservation laws to protect those in the wild.
