This striking bird is known as the king vulture, and it certainly lives up to that regal title. As the largest and most colorful of the New World vultures, it was regarded as a messenger between humans and gods in ancient Mayan legend.

Yet even this "king" is not immune to the impacts of habitat loss. The AZA Raptor Taxon Advisory Group works with AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums as well as partners in the birds' range countries to support research and outreach programs to help protect raptors in their native habitats.
