The popularity of the zebra and its distinctive stripes offers no clue to its actual endangerment. The Grevy's zebra is one of the rarest land mammals, with only about 2,200 remaining in the wild. Accredited zoos are highly committed to the conservation of the Grevy's zebra.

While the North American population continues to grow under the Species Survival PlanŠ, zoo biologists are working directly with communities in Kenya and Ethiopia to reverse the decline of wild populations. AZA's Conservation Endowment Fund is helping support some of this important work.
