Once as common as clouds above the mountains, some bighorn sheep populations have been dramatically reduced by over hunting, loss of grazing land and waterholes, and introduced diseases. Managed breeding, rescue and rehabilitation, and reintroduction efforts supported by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and collaborating AZA institutions have enabled bighorn populations to rebound to sustainable numbers in some areas of their former range.
